Intaglio for beginners Oct. 2, 2010.

Etching is the process of using strong acid or mordant to cut into the unprotected parts of a metal surface to create a design in intaglio in the metal (the original process—in modern manufacturing other chemicals may be used on other types of material). As an intaglio method of printmaking it is, along with engraving, the most important technique for old master prints, and remains widely used today.

In this class students will learn how to create their own images on a metal plate and print them on paper. This class teaches basic intaglio processes for beginners.

Bring a 8X6 inch drawing ready to transfer to the plate (zinc or cooper).

Chine-colle Workshop

Chine-colle Workshop
Instructor: Eveline Kolijn
Fee: $50 Maximum: 6
June 19, 2-4PM

Chine-colle is a method of bonding lightweight, natural paper on a print, through the use of a printing press. It is a way to add color and texture without having to prepare an additional plate to print.

- I shall demonstrate two different glue methods of Chine-Colle: One using traditional Japanese ricepaste and the other using dry, Polifix wall-paperglue-powder.

- I shall discuss the different uses of the Chine-colle technique, for different effects and demonstrate printing with these techniques (cut-out sections, whole paper and printed with another image).

- The participants should bring etched plates with which they want to experiment, lightweight papers in different tints and textures, and normal printing paper. They can also bring lightweight paper with printed texture on it.

Gallery Hours:

Friday – Saturday 1-5 PM or by appointment. *3rd Friday 1-9PM*

*Our gallery is run by Volunteers: Please call ahead to insure we’re open.* 708-386-3552

Printing with Styrofoam Plates: A Family Activity
This month we have a unique opportunity at Expressions Graphics. We have a guest printmaker who is exhibiting in our gallery Rene Arceo. He has exhibited widely in the Midwest, Mexico and Canada. Rene also teaches in the Chicago public school system. He's a wonderful teacher and is doing a benefit workshop to help our not-for-proffit printmaking gallery and studio.

Create prints using new and recycled Styrofoam (plates, containers). There is no carving and no sharp tools involved. It is easy for adults and children of any age. Create your image on the Styrofoam using a regular pencil or ball-point pen. Print by hand on regular typing paper using water based markers. Very easy and lots of fun for the whole family.

Fee: $15 One Parent/Child
Sat. March 20, 10:00 am-11:00 am
Instructor: Rene Arceo.
